My first award!! {Auckland maternity photography, newborn photography, family photographer & Christchurch & Palmerston North photographer}

It’s a bronze for me!!  I’m super excited to have been awarded at this years prestigious New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography 2013 Iris Awards!  The caliber of work presented was utterly amazing, and I’m still in a bit of shock that I get to be included.  I can only begin to describe the process and the feelings that come when deciding to enter something of this level.  You go from hating all your work and feeling like nothing is good enough, to deciding – ok maybe you’ve got a little bit of a chance, to excitement and hope when you see the finished beautifully printed and mounted photo, to utter sickness when you finally send them off for judging, and finally relief when it’s over – whatever the outcome.  It is a roller coaster to say the least, one that tortures you, but that you also love and never want to end.  It was great meeting so many wonderful, well established, inspiring photographers, and see that they too feel the same way and go through a similar process.  It’s very encouraging.  I’ve learnt so much from watching the judging process and seeing what they think makes not only great daily work of a professional photographer, but award worthy work.  I’m really looking forward to getting out there and creating for next year, and seeing if I can top this year.  Bring on NZIPP Iris 2014!

I also had one entry in the landscape category which scored a high professional standard, 2 points off a bronze, and I’m so happy with that!  While it’s not an award, it’s still recognition of high professional technique and practice.  I was completely sure it was going to be trashed by the judges upon seeing the other entries, but luckily that wasn’t the case, and I’m happy where I landed.  Landscape is a new area for me, but one that I personally really love and hope to continue growing in.  I never would’ve been able to create this image without the past teaching and encouragement of a great photographer who I thank very much.

I strongly encourage anyone wishing to increase their photography skills to seek knowledge first, then to just get out there while having fun and create!  Now it’s time for me to sign off and follow my own advice! :)

Thanks everyone for all the love and support

xx Shari

Megan & Brent’s family session {maternity, newborn & family photography in Auckland, Palmerston North, & Christchurch}

A couple weeks back while I was in Palmy shooting, I had the pleasure of meeting Megan, Brent, and their two lovely boys who came out from Wanganui for me .  I was excited and nervous to finally meet Megan who is an awesome child photographer herself – pressure!!  Lol but we had a blast, and I even scored a dinner invite from their son afterwards!  Megan told me afterwards that according to Brent “that was kind a fun”  Love it when the boys enjoy it too!  Pleasure meeting you all finally!

Mother & Son {Auckland maternity photography, newborn photography, family photographer & Christchurch & Palmerston North photographer}

This is the beautiful Sarah and her handsome 5 month old son Lochlan.  He was such a great little guy, happy as a clam to be moved around, laid down, held up, all without making a squeak for the whole shoot at the Auckland domain!  Unfortunately dad couldn’t make the shoot, but I hope they will still treasure these photos of mother and son, such a special memory it will be!  Awesome meeting you Sarah, can’t wait to catch up again!

Family Love {Auckland maternity photography, newborn photography, family photographer & Christchurch, Palmerston North photographer}

Meet Cindy & Matt and their beautiful combined family.  Cindy was the winner of my return to NZ positive juju giveaway, and I’m so happy because she is just lovely!  We went down to a quiet little beach in Auckland right before sunset and braved the wind to get these gorgeous family photography images!  So happy to meet you all, enjoy!

Getting acquainted with my power tools {Newborn photographer Auckland, Palmerston North Photographer}

I love power tools.  Always have.  I was the girl who took wood working for a few terms in High School – and not just for the boys :)  And given that we sold or gave away pretty much all our furniture upon moving “back” to Canada, the new house is now a little empty.  Perfect chance to start over and choose pieces that I really love.  I have wanted a farmhouse/rustic table and bench for years, so figured this was the perfect time to make one.  I got the timber from a local mill and decided to go all out and build a full 2.5m 10 seater one!  It’s pretty darn huge, and luckily the room can handle it because it’s awesome.  The grain is beautiful!  Although I’ll admit it seems much bigger than the tape layout I had done…  Never mind, I LOVE it!  I’ll just need to make sure that the next house I move to has a room big enough for it because I’m not giving it up! hahaha  At some point I’ll get the chairs and a burlap runner that I’ve already decided on in my head, but for now I’m just enjoying having a table to sit around – one that I’m sure will be a centre for family activity for years to come.

Go ahead and give building something a try!  It’s fun, way less expensive than the shops, and you will be oh so proud once done.  If you need a good starting point check out Ana White – awesome free plans for all types of projects.

Have a good weekend everyone!

xx Shari
