A Palmy session for this lovely family! {Auckland & Palmerston North Maternity, Newborn, & Family Photography}

A couple weeks back I was able to return to Palmerston North for a special weekend.  It went something like this…  Lovely chats with dear friends who almost all had something exciting happening in their lives.  A movie night in my friends barn with probably 20 members of her family – where it was projected big on the wall and we stayed up late until finally falling asleep in our sleeping bags.  Eating far too much at my favourite cafe so I’d be filled up until my next visit.  And to top it off, I ALSO got to catch up with this amazing family!  What a weekend!

I first met Tracey and Jarrod, and their little family, more than 2 years ago when I photographed them one evening at the beach.  So I was really excited to be asked back to update their family photos!  Little Leah was only a few months old, and she’s now a full-blown running and talking almost 3 year old!  It’s crazy to see them change like that!  It really doesn’t feel that long ago.

We met by the river and were greeted by perfect evening light!  We had a fun little shoot with smiles and laughs, made some beautiful images, and I didn’t think it couldn’t get any better!  But then Tracey said in a msg after choosing her canvas and prints that she “literally had tears of excitement, and would be waiting on the doorstep for the courier”  I’m so lucky to be brought into people’s lives, and asked to create something they will truly treasure.  Often it goes beyond just the delivery of the final products, and friendships are born :)  Lucky girl I am!

So without further delay, here are just few of my favourite images for our shoot.  Hope you enjoy!

xx Shari

2 weeks new {Maternity & Newborn photography Auckland}

Just a little blog today sharing some images from this shoot with the beautiful baby R who was just 2 weeks new.  She was such a small little sweetie, which was a big change after my last couple of big boys who were almost double her size.  She was wide awake for most of the shoot, but that’s ok we got some beautiful photos of her and those big, dark, old soul eyes, that are taking the world in :)  And thanks to the amazing family who wouldn’t let me leave both after the shoot, and after the ordering session, until I filled my tummy with delicious homemade meals.  Yumo!

A weekend of creativity {Auckland newborn, maternity, & family photographer}

This past long weekend I was lucky enough to be a part of a creative collaboration that took place in Raglan.  We had models, a makeup artist, costumes, props, an amazing batch hook-up, late night curry and of course wine!  The whole reason the trip was first arranged was that a few awesome photographers and I wanted to try stretching our creative minds.  Get out of the daily work.  And what better way than to do it with industry friends where it’s all about experimenting, learning, and of course fun.  A safe zone where some ideas may soar, and some may fall flat on our face.

This is very much out of my comfort zone in terms of editing, a first actually, but it’s fun to stretch those muscles and see what comes of it.  I’ve got a few more I’ll be working on, but for now I’ll just show this :)  I saw this image as a really soft, almost dreamlike scene from another time.  I hope I’ve been able to pass that feeling onto you as well.

xx Shari

My first award!! {Auckland maternity photography, newborn photography, family photographer & Christchurch & Palmerston North photographer}

It’s a bronze for me!!  I’m super excited to have been awarded at this years prestigious New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography 2013 Iris Awards!  The caliber of work presented was utterly amazing, and I’m still in a bit of shock that I get to be included.  I can only begin to describe the process and the feelings that come when deciding to enter something of this level.  You go from hating all your work and feeling like nothing is good enough, to deciding – ok maybe you’ve got a little bit of a chance, to excitement and hope when you see the finished beautifully printed and mounted photo, to utter sickness when you finally send them off for judging, and finally relief when it’s over – whatever the outcome.  It is a roller coaster to say the least, one that tortures you, but that you also love and never want to end.  It was great meeting so many wonderful, well established, inspiring photographers, and see that they too feel the same way and go through a similar process.  It’s very encouraging.  I’ve learnt so much from watching the judging process and seeing what they think makes not only great daily work of a professional photographer, but award worthy work.  I’m really looking forward to getting out there and creating for next year, and seeing if I can top this year.  Bring on NZIPP Iris 2014!

I also had one entry in the landscape category which scored a high professional standard, 2 points off a bronze, and I’m so happy with that!  While it’s not an award, it’s still recognition of high professional technique and practice.  I was completely sure it was going to be trashed by the judges upon seeing the other entries, but luckily that wasn’t the case, and I’m happy where I landed.  Landscape is a new area for me, but one that I personally really love and hope to continue growing in.  I never would’ve been able to create this image without the past teaching and encouragement of a great photographer who I thank very much.

I strongly encourage anyone wishing to increase their photography skills to seek knowledge first, then to just get out there while having fun and create!  Now it’s time for me to sign off and follow my own advice! :)

Thanks everyone for all the love and support

xx Shari
